Why Is My Website Traffic Dropping? What AI Search Means for Your Business

You've checked Google Analytics. Traffic is down. But your rankings look fine. Nothing obvious has changed on your website. So what's going on?

If this sounds familiar you're in good company. Business owners across the UK are seeing the same pattern — and in most cases, the explanation is the same. AI is changing how people search, and those changes are already reducing the number of visitors reaching websites that were previously performing well.

This guide explains what's actually happening, how to tell whether your site has been affected and what you can do about it.

What Has Changed

For two decades, the way people found websites was consistent. Type a question into Google, get a list of links, click through to a website. That model is now shifting — and shifting quickly.

Google now displays AI-generated answers at the top of many search results — called AI Overviews — which summarise information directly on the results page without the user needing to click through to a website. As of early 2026, AI Overviews appear on approximately 48% of all Google searches — up from around 31% a year earlier.

The impact on click-through rates is significant. When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates for top-ranking pages drop by between 34% and 61% depending on the query. You can rank number one and still lose half your clicks. Around 60% of Google searches now end without a single click to any website at all.

Beyond Google, tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot are used by a growing number of people to research products, compare suppliers and find services — again answering questions directly rather than sending users to websites. Around 47% of UK adults used an AI-powered search tool in 2026.

Is Every Business Affected Equally?

No — and this is an important point. The impact varies significantly depending on what your business does and what people search for when they find you.

  • Most Affected

Websites that rely heavily on informational searches are the most affected. If your traffic comes from people searching for answers to general questions — "how do I do X", "what is Y", "best way to Z" — AI Overviews are increasingly answering those questions directly on the results page. Informational queries trigger AI Overviews approximately 39% of the time — significantly more than commercial or transactional queries.

Publishers, how-to guides, FAQ pages and general information resources have seen the most significant traffic impacts. HubSpot — one of the world's largest content marketing businesses — saw its organic traffic drop by an estimated 70–80% between late 2024 and early 2025, largely due to AI Overviews replacing the "what is X" content it had built its business on.

  • Less Affected (For Now)

Businesses with strong local intent, transactional intent or specific brand searches are less immediately affected. If someone searches for "Magento agency London", "book a table at [restaurant name]" or "buy [specific product]", they are looking to take an action — not just get an answer. Commercial queries trigger AI Overviews only around 22% of the time — roughly half the rate of informational searches.

However the pace of change is rapid. Fewer than 5% of UK SMEs have taken any deliberate action to improve their AI search visibility — which represents both a risk and a first-mover opportunity for businesses that act now.

How to Tell If Your Website Has Been Affected

The most reliable way to check is Google Search Console — the free tool Google provides that shows how your website is performing in search results.

  • Check Impressions vs Clicks

In Search Console go to Performance → Search results. Look at the trend for Impressions (how many times your pages appeared in search results) and Clicks (how many times someone actually clicked through to your site).

If impressions have remained stable or grown but clicks have fallen, that is a strong indicator that AI Overviews are appearing above your result and intercepting traffic before the user reaches your link. Your pages are still being found — but the answer is being delivered before anyone clicks.

  • Check Your Click-Through Rate

Click-through rate is the percentage of impressions that result in a click. A falling CTR on previously strong pages — without a corresponding drop in ranking position — is a clear sign that something above your result is capturing the click before it reaches you.

  • Use the AI Overviews Filter in Search Console

Google added an AI Overviews filter to Search Console in mid-2025. Under Search Appearance you can now filter to see which specific queries are triggering AI Overviews for your content — and how your impressions and clicks compare on those queries versus others. This is the most direct diagnostic tool available.

  • Search for Your Own Key Terms

Type the search terms you most rely on into Google and look at what appears above the organic results. If an AI Overview is present above your listing, you are competing with Google's own AI for the click. This takes two minutes and tells you immediately what your potential visitors are seeing.

Is There Any Good News?

Yes — and it's worth understanding because it changes the picture significantly.

While AI tools are intercepting some search traffic, the visitors they do send to websites are significantly more valuable. Early 2026 data shows that AI-referred visitors convert approximately 4.4 times higher than regular search visitors and spend around 68% more time on site. The reason is straightforward — a user who clicks through from an AI answer has already received a trusted summary of the topic and is further along in their decision-making process.

This means the businesses that get cited by AI tools are receiving a smaller but more qualified audience. Being visible in AI search is not just about protecting traffic — it's about being present at a higher-value moment in the buyer journey.

What You Can Do About It

  • Check Your Data First

Before taking any action, establish what is actually happening on your specific website. Not every traffic drop is caused by AI — rankings can fall for many reasons including technical issues, content decay, increased competition or seasonal changes. Use Search Console to diagnose the cause before assuming AI is responsible.

  • Create Content AI Can't Replace

AI tools summarise existing information well but they struggle to replicate genuine expertise, first-hand experience, specific case studies and original opinion. Content that draws on your direct experience — real projects, honest perspectives, specific outcomes — is harder for AI to replace and more likely to be cited by AI tools than replaced by them.

  • Optimise to Be Cited — Not Just to Rank

Being cited by AI tools is becoming as valuable as ranking in traditional search results. The websites being cited are those with clear, authoritative, well-structured content that directly answers specific questions. In 2026, websites that earn the most web mentions receive up to ten times more mentions in AI Overviews than those with lower authority.

  • Make Sure Your Technical SEO Foundation Is Strong

AI Overviews pull content from websites that Google trusts and can crawl efficiently. A website with strong technical SEO — fast loading, clean structure, proper schema markup, mobile optimised — is more likely to be cited in AI Overviews than one with technical issues. If your technical SEO foundation is weak, fixing it is the highest priority action.

  • Strengthen Non-Search Channels

If organic search is your only source of website traffic, the shift in search behaviour represents a concentration risk regardless of AI. Email marketing, social media, direct traffic and referrals all reduce dependency on organic Google traffic and provide resilience against further changes.

  • Monitor Search Console Regularly

The search landscape is changing month by month. Checking Search Console regularly — looking at impressions, clicks and CTR trends — gives you early warning of changes before they become significant problems.

Our View

AI is changing search. For some businesses that change is already visible in their traffic data — impressions holding while clicks fall is the clearest sign. For others the impact is coming but hasn't arrived yet. The right response is preparation, not panic.

The businesses most at risk are those built entirely on broad informational content with no other channel, no strong brand identity and no specific reason for a buyer to seek them out. For most SMEs with a genuine product or service offer, the risk is manageable — but it does require attention and action.
